Jacques Villon Etchings and Lithographs--Unique Images or Proofs
This website includes work selected from the 353 etchings, lithographs and paintings on paper, by Jacques Villon, (1875-1963-French) in the collection of Jack Leissring. Villon, born Gaston Duchamp, was the premier 'painter-engraver' of the 20th Century, receiving all of the important French and European awards and honors. He was the eldest brother of Raymond Duchamp-Villon, the sculptor and of Marcel and Suzanne Duchamp, painters. This page, and its related links, focuses upon unique prints, some not included in the G&P Catalog. There are very rare proofs, often annotated, originating from important collections and exhibitions, including those of Goldschmidt and Villon's printer, Atelier Paul and Raymond Haasen (which printed for Picasso, Ferdinand Leger, Chagal, Villon and others). The father, Paul Haasen started the atelier which was later run by his son, Raymond. Paul also printed for Stanley Hayter. A group of Villon's images,'hors commerce,' un-realized or non-completed editions, were obtained directly from Raymond Haasen, Jean Pascal Lorrain (printer) or from Galerie Gravure Actuelle, by Larry Saphire, James Churchill and Walter Maibaum (Moderisme Fine Art, New York City). The prints were authenticated by Haasen and Lorrain. The collection includes 19 unique works (including two paintings on paper) and 66 authenticated and rare proofs.
