Jacques Villon Etchings--1937: Poems of Pierre Corrard
This website includes work selected from the 353 etchings, lithographs and paintings on paper, by Jacques Villon, (1875-1963-French) in the collection of Jack Leissring. Villon, born Gaston Duchamp, was the premier 'painter-engraver' of the 20th Century, receiving all of the important French and European awards and honors. He was the eldest brother of Raymond Duchamp-Villon, the sculptor and of Marcel and Suzanne Duchamp, painters. This page includes etchings based upon the poetry of Pierre Corrard (1877-1914), made in 1937. Villon was deeply interested in poetry; his studio became the meeting place for poets such as Guillaume Apollinaire. He chose his name from a 15th C. French poet: Francois Villon. Pierre Corrard was killed in WWI, November 21, 1914 in Argonne Forest on the plateau of Bolante. This portfolio of etchings is pen-signed in the colophon and published in an edition of 100. The collection owns number 19.
